How to Declutter Your House

Do you ever feel like clutter magically and quietly multiplies every time you close your eyes? You’re not alone. After all, it takes almost no effort to accumulate “stuff” that sooner or later no longer serves a purpose. But the thought of decluttering? Even the thought of it can prove exhausting. So, take baby steps and watch how much you can accomplish with minimal effort with each purge.

How to Declutter Your House

  1. Cardboard Boxes – Recycle cardboard boxes snacks, cereal, and dry goods come in and put them in air tight storage containers or bags. You’ll free up space and so have more room to buy bulk items that save you money.
  2. Wire Hangers – To echo Mommy Dearest, “No more wire hangers!”. Invest in matching wood or plastic hangers. Your closet will instantly look more organized.
  3. Old Shoes – If you can’t remember the last time you wore those shoes all the way in the back of your closet, it’s time to donate them. Or ditch those without a mate or ones that are broken.
  4. Old Clothing – If you haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to move donate it.
  5. Old Toys and Sports Equipment – Unless it’s a special keepsake, donate toys and sports equipment your children no longer use.
  6. Lonely Socks – Unless you’re into the mismatched sock thing, it’s time to let those mate-less socks go.
  7. Old Makeup – Do you remember when you bought that foundation or lipstick? Makeup doesn’t last forever. For example, blush, bronzer, lipstick, and eye shadow should would be replaced every two years.
  8. Samples – Unless you plan on using department store samples, pass them on to someone who might will or toss them. And next time, don’t be shy about saying “No thank you.”
  9. Old Medication – Follow the FDA’s guidelines to safely dispose of expired or unidentifiable medications. Many pharmacies also offer drug take-back days.
  10. Old Spices – Take a few minutes to go through your spice drawer or cabinet. Toss anything that’s expired. If there’s no clear expiration date, do the sniff test. Open each one and see if it has a scent. If not, chances are it won’t have any flavor left, either.
