Common AC Repair Problems

Most AC systems are built to last 10 – 15 years. The better and more faithfully you have yours maintained, the more productive years you can expect from it. But even well-maintained systems eventually require professional attention beyond simple annual maintenance.

When that time comes, here are a few of the more common warning signs to be alert to:

Frozen Coils

The coils inside your air handle are prone to freezing, and can do so for a variety of reasons. Evaporator coils help to both cool and dehumidify your home. When the air is dehumidified, moisture forms as condensation that drips off your coil. If something’s wrong, this moisture can freeze, and so can the coils. Chances are the only thing you’re going to notice is a gradual loss of cool air, but frozen coils are often the root cause. The best way to prevent this from happening is with annual preventative maintenance.

High-Pitched Wailing Noise

If you’re suddenly being serenaded by a wailing noise, chances are it stems from the bearings inside the air handler, usually located in the attic. You can check this quickly by shutting off the power to the air handler and pulling on the motor shaft. If there is greater than 1/8” of play, chances are the bearings are worn and need to be replaced.

The Air Handler is Leaking

Looking for a good reason to climb up into your attic from time to time?  Here’s one: checking the condensation pan in your air handler to see if water is leaking from it or anywhere else. Water leaks should be repaired as quickly as possible to prevent structural damage along with a mold and mildew nightmare.
