If only central air systems were like desk lamps – at least a good one. You take it out of the box, place it on the desk where you want it, plug it into a working socket, turn on the switch, and there it is – a brand new light source. And now, back to work or homework.
Now let’s talk about central air systems. They’re not plug and play. If they were, you wouldn’t need Optimum Air to get the job done. In fact, there are multiple steps required to properly size, install, and maintain a new home comfort system, and we’re true pros at all levels.
And yet, even with all the skill in the world, your AC system still won’t function properly unless you avoid some very common mistakes. Here’s a list we’ve compiled from our experience in working with homeowners throughout Arlington, TX and the greater DFW area.
Setting Thermostats Too Low –
If you continuously set the thermostat at 70 out of habit, you may be paying too much to cool your home. Every degree you raise the temp can shave up to 3 percent off your electricity bill. It might seem a little uncomfortable at first, but it won’t be long before you’re just as comfortable at 72 or 73.
Ignoring Ceiling Fans –
Running ceilings fans counter-clockwise while your AC system is on can help circulate cool air throughout the home and push that cooler air down where you need it most. Once heating season rolls around, run your fans in reverse to help push warmed air back down. Summer or winter, keeping a ceiling fan or two on helps lower your utility costs while enhancing your indoor comfort.
Neglecting Air Filters –
During warmer weather, clean or replace your AC filter about every eight weeks, or more often if it seems overly clogged. A clean filter helps your AC run more efficiently, helps keep cooling costs down, and improves air quality inside your home.
Crowding Your Outdoor Condensing Unit –
One sure way to get less from your AC system is to let grass and shrubs crowed your outdoor condensing unit. It needs room to “breathe” to operate at peak efficiency, so cut that grass, trim those hedges or, better yet, just don’t grow anything too close to the condenser in the first place.
Letting Coils & Fins Get Grimy –
Your AC unit’s condenser coils absorb heat from inside your house, while its evaporator coils and fins let heat transfer from the unit to the air outside. When dust and grime build up on the coils and fins, it impedes heat transfer which usually results in high utility bills.
