With longer and warmer days replacing the winter doldrums, spring is a great time to tackle certain projects and prep your home and garden for the outdoor season. Here’s a checklist to keep handy, at least until the items on it become second nature.
- Gutters and Downspouts – Clean your gutters and downspouts early in the season to ensure that spring rainwater flows freely and away from your home.
- Exterior Woodwork – Reseal or stain your wood fences, decks, railings, pergolas, and other structures every two years to keep them in tip-top shape. While you’re at it, inspect them for loose boards, rotted wood, or other damage.
- Termites – Termites swarm in early spring, so be on the lookout for these wood-destroying, winged insects and contact a licensed professional at the earliest signs of infestation.
- Roof – Old Man Winter can do a number on your roof. Use binoculars for a visual inspection and look for missing or damaged shingles, deteriorated flashing, or other signs of damage.
- Exterior Paint and Siding – Inspect the exterior of your home for peeling paint or cracked siding. If you’re thinking of repainting or siding your home, early spring is a great time to schedule that project to beat the summer rush.
- Driveways and Pathways – Extreme temperatures can be rough on asphalt and concrete. Check driveways and walkways for damage and reseal, repair, or replace as needed.
- Irrigation System – Inspect your irrigation system by running it through all zones manually and walking around your property. Look for damaged heads and adjust those spraying the house or wasting water by spraying the street.
- Mosquitoes – Do your part in preventing a mosquito invasion this summer by getting rid of any standing water on your property.
- Window and Door Screens – Before you pop screens back into place, inspect them for rips and holes. If they exist, you can get a screen repair kit at your local hardware store for an easy and inexpensive fix.
- Central Air – The best way to keep your home consistently cool and your AC system repair- free is with annual preventative maintenance.
