Comfortable Indoor Humidity

Everyone knows about outdoor humidity, but how much do you pay attention to relative indoor humidity? Most of our customers would answer that question like this: “Not so much.”

Comfortable Indoor Humidity

Well for starters, the right level of indoor humidity is just as important to your overall comfort as the temperature. The older your AC system, for example, the less efficiently it rids your home of excess humidity. When that happens, it can affect your sleep while wreaking havoc on your sinuses, allergies and asthma.

To compensate for high indoor humidity during the summer, you’re likely to spike the thermostat to restore some of the comfort you’ve lost. That, in turn, can serve only to drive up your energy costs while adding to system wear and tear.

Then winter comes along, a time when indoor humidity is likely to be lower than recommended levels. There are numerous negative effects from low indoor humidity, including dry skin and sinuses, frizzy hair, nose bleeds, static electrical shock, and more.

Experts agree that an ideal level of relative indoor humidity is between 30 and 55 percent relative humidity. How can you achieve that? With a whole-house humidifier from Optimum Air to add humidity in the winter, and a whole-house dehumidifier to push excess humidity outdoors during the summer. Both systems enable you to adjust humidity levels up or down to better meet your family’s comfort needs.
