How to Choose a New Furnace

Here’s the short answer: “Don’t even try unless you’re an HVAC professional in your own right.”

You see, today there are numerous makes and models of home new furnace with similar options and comparable quality. Nine times out of ten, you can’t go wrong.

Where you can go wrong is hiring the wrong heating and cooling company, and that’s where the furnace replacement process should start.

Here at Optimum Air, we don’t start with the furnace: recommending the one we think is best suited to your home and budget is one of the final steps in the process.

Here’s just some of what comes first:

New Furnace

  • Performing heat load calculations so you get the right size furnace. If it’s too big, it will cycle on and off frequently…after a while, that takes its toll. If the furnace is undersized, it will run more frequently which also results in added wear and tear.
  • Checking your ductwork for proper airflow, sizing, and any cracks or gaps that need to be corrected.
  • Finding places where air may be escaping your home – such as through and around windows, doors, and your attic – so proper corrective measures can be taken to keep your heating costs down.
  • Checking the location and integrity of vents and registers.

The right heating and cooling company also will ask questions to determine if you have any special indoor air quality needs.  If, for example, a family member suffers from allergies, asthma, or some other respiratory ailment, a whole-house air purifier can bring considerable relief in conjunction with your new furnace.
