If bedtime means long, restless hours of watching the clock and very little sleep, stop taking that laying down. Plus, you’re far from alone. About 33% of Americans have at least mild insomnia, and many of them struggle to find the magic wand that will break the spell.
Here are several natural cures for insomnia that have helped others. You’re bound to find one or more that will work for you, too.
Change Your Diet
Certain foods act as stimulants, caffeinated coffee at or near the top of the list. So, come bedtime, try hot decaffeinated tea instead, lay off the carbs, candy, high-fiber raw vegetables, and many others. If you’re hungry, try an avocado or organic yogurt (no sugar!) instead.
Reduce Stress
Here are a few suggestions on how to stop your mind from churning over the things that worry you:
- At least 30 minutes before bedtime, shut off all electronics and read something that helps you relax.
- Keep a paper journal and make nightly entries, especially about any issues of concern to you. Getting it on paper can help you make sense of it all and stop stressing about it – at least long enough to get to sleep.
- Exercise is one of the most natural ways to create endorphins which help you sleep peacefully.
Take Natural Supplements
Magnesium sleep supplements are the most effective way to cure insomnia without drugs. About 400 to 500 mg a night should be enough. If you have jet lag, taking melatonin for a few days is okay, but you don’t want to do that long-term as it can be habit forming.
Inhale Lavender
A 2016 study published in the journal Explore found that college students who inhaled a lavender-scented patch before bed reported better nighttime sleep and more daytime energy, compared to those who inhaled a placebo patch. Studies in other populations, including middle-age women and heart-disease patients, have also suggested that lavender can improve sleep quality.
