Why You Need an Air Conditioned Garage

Not everyone needs a heated garage. In the DFW area, you’re way more likely to see garages with no conditioned air, or AC only.

Still, unless all you do is run in and out of your car and store your tools and gardening equipment, you have some very good reasons to add AC to that space, especially with our grueling, hot summers.

Maybe, for example, you’re an antique car collector – not only that, but you have a dedicated garage space where you work on it. The car needs protection from extreme heat, and so do you unless you’re simply showing it off.

Cans of paint can spoil in an un-cooled garage as can numerous other things you might store there. Suffice it to say, there are plenty of reasons to add AC into the mix – the only question is which option right for you.

Window Air Conditioners

A window AC unit might get the job done if your garage already has a window the unit will fit into. Today they’re available in sizes between 6,000 to 28,000 BTUs. That should be plenty of cooling power for most one- and two-car garages.

Window AC units are your least expensive option, reasonably energy efficient, while numerous models come with remotes and timers plus other features to enhance your comfort level.

On the downside, you’ll need a bracket if the window doesn’t have a sill. They’re the noisiest of the 3 options we’re presenting and yet some are remarkably quiet.  Plus, window units – as you can imagine, aren’t sized for every size window. Finally, window units pose a home security threat.

Through the Wall Air Conditioners

These units are much like window units without the window. You know, like the kind you once saw in a lot of motels and still see in condo units and apartments. Some through-the-wall units are heat pumps, meaning they provide heating and cooling for year-round convenience.

These AC units are more energy efficient than window units, feature quieter operation, provide added security, and they don’t block window views.

It’s also important to note that through-the-wall units don’t offer as much cooling power as window units.

Portable Air Conditioners

These handy little “guys” are not well-suited to cool your garage and for a few common-sense reasons:

  • They take up floor space and are likely to get dinged up in a garage setting
  • They must be vented out a window
  • Less energy efficient than the other two options
  • They’re not powerful enough to combat the heat and humidity often found in the garage. The largest are just 14,000 BTU, and quite often that’s not going to get it done.

One More HVAC Option – from Optimum Air

If you’d like a more permanent option, then a ductless AC system for your garage is just the thing. Just like it sounds, no duct work is required. It’s wall mounted and connects to an outdoor condensing unit/heat pump. Ductless systems provide both warm and cool air for year round comfort and protection for your valuable or climate-sensitive belongings. And that’s just where the benefits and advantages begin.
