“My AC System Isn’t Working!”

All kinds of things can account for a sudden lack of cool, comfortable air. Maybe the solution is simple, maybe it’s more involved, or maybe the problem is so severe your system needs to be replaced.

But, before anyone hits the panic button, let’s review a few troubleshooting steps you can take on your own – hopefully one simple step is all it will take to reactivate your system.

  • Whether the system is running or not, check the thermostat to ensure it’s set to “cool”. It’s such a common mistake – the kind people often kick themselves for once the mistake comes to life. While you’re at it, check the temperature setting – maybe that’s been altered, too.
  • Most air conditioners have a shut-off switch near the outdoor unit. It’s usually a metal box that’s attached to your house. If someone has recently worked on the AC, they may have left it in the “off” position on accident. Talk about the little things that can drive you batty!
  • Look for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. If there was a power surge, your air conditioner might have blown a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker. You can look for this problem in two places: your main electrical panel and the outdoor shutoff box.
  • When your air conditioner works, it creates condensation, which is drained out of your home via a drain line. When the humidity is high, condensate lines tend to clog. Once that happens, the drain line should trip a safety switch that shuts down the AC systems. One way to unclog the drain line is by using a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the blockage.
  • Some AC systems have “reset” switches near the outside unit. You can try pushing this button to see if it helps. If your air conditioner doesn’t have a reset button, try this:
  1. Turn off your AC at the thermostat
  2. Wait 5 minutes
  3. Turn it back on again
