How to Boost Airflow for Improved Comfort & Reduced Energy Costs

As you shake off the chill of winter and welcome the warmth of spring, give your air conditioning system a little much needed attention. Poor airflow can cause hot and cold spots, stale air, and rising energy costs. Not to mention added wear and tear on your AC system.

Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do yourself to improve airflow inside your home. The kind you can do on your own can make a big difference in home comfort levels and seasonal energy costs.

Start with Your Air Filters

Think of air filters as your HVAC system’s lungs. When they get clogged with dust, dirt, and allergens, it becomes harder for your system to breathe – and for clean air to move freely throughout your home. Check your filters monthly and plan to replace them every 1–3 months, especially during peak spring and summer use.

Clean Vents and Registers

Over time, vent covers and the ducts behind them can collect dust, pet hair, and other debris, blocking airflow and reducing air quality. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean vent covers and check that nothing is obstructing the flow of air, such as furniture, curtains, or rugs.

Put Your Ceiling Fans to Work

Ceiling fans are a great way to help circulate air and take the pressure off your AC system. Set them to spin counterclockwise in the warmer months to create a cool breeze. And don’t forget, a clean fan runs more efficiently, so be sure to wipe down the blades before putting them into rotation.

Seal Up Air Leaks

Air leaks around windows, doors, and attic spaces can interfere with proper airflow and make your system work overtime. Grab some caulk or weatherstripping to seal any visible gaps.

Consider Zoning Your HVAC System

Does one room in your home feel like a sauna while another feels like a fridge? A zoning system might be the solution. With multiple thermostats and motorized dampers, zoning allows you to control the temperature in different areas of your home independently. This improves airflow where you most need it.

Schedule an AC Tune-Up & Inspection
