How to Control Dust at Home

The war on dust is never ending. No sooner do you finish dusting before a new layer makes itself at home again. Even the most dedicated of “clean freaks” can’t seem to keep up with the constant collection of pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and every other little particle that quietly accumulates on just about every surface.

What’s worse is that some of our daily habits could be hurting, not helping, our efforts. Here are 7 habits you should break immediately for a less dusty home.

Control Dust at Home

  1. Dirty HVAC Filters – A clean filter helps your heating and cooling system run more efficiently. But that’s not all. Your filter is designed to trap allergens, dirt, dust, and other particles from entering your living spaces, which not only makes for cleaner, more breathable air, but less “stuff” settling on surfaces. Clean or change your air filter every 4 weeks or so.
  2. Neglecting Bedding – Wash your sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers weekly and vacuum the mattress often. Consider investing in dust-mite proof mattress and pillow covers.
  3. Cluttered Surfaces – The more items on your dresser, shelves, and bookcases, the more dust they collect. Consider storing items in drawers or cubbies; also, reduce the number of knickknacks and books you display.
  4. High-Pile Carpeting – A soft, plush carpet feels great on the feet, but it traps more dirt and dust than shorter, tighter weave rugs or carpets. If you must have something soft to walk on, be sure to vacuum rugs and carpeting weekly.
  5. Feather Dusters – Old school feather dusters are great at moving dust around, not picking it up. Use a microfiber cleaning cloth or a clean, damp, rag for better results.
  6. Leaving Shoes On – Imagine everything you walk on through the course of your day. Now imagine bringing all that into your home. Keep your air cleaner and reduce dust by taking shoes off at the door and asking your visitors to do the same.
  7. Dry Air – Dry air and dust are a match made in heaven. To break up the love affair, keep your homes’ humidity level between 30 and 50 percent.

Dust can also be a health issue if you’re allergic to it. That gives you added incentive to keep your house clean and to consider purchasing a whole-house air filtration. Optimum Air offers you multiple options with the right type and size for every home.  Contact us for more information today.
