How to Improve Curb Appeal

Certain expressions in life can make you cringe if you hear them too often. You know, like: “Be the person you were meant to be.”  “Accidents will happen.”  And then there’s this little gem – “Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”

But what about: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Even if you’re sick of that one, too, this time it bears a closer look – especially as it pertains to how your home appears from a curbside view. Can outdoor appearances impact your ability to sell your home, and the ultimate sale price? You bet they can.

If you’re in a selling mode and want to feature your home in the best possible light, here are a few suggestions on how to dress up the exterior:

Improve Curb Appeal

Clear the path. The pathway or sidewalk to your front door should be clear of any obstructions or hazards. Ideally, it’s wide enough for two people to approach side by side. Cut back any overhanging branches or encroaching shrubs.

Light the way. Landscape lighting not only adds ambiance, it deters would-be burglars and vandals. Consider adding inexpensive solar-powered LED lights that simply stick in the ground; an attractive front porch lamp would be a nice addition, too.

Liven things up. Add visual interest by painting your front door a bold or contrasting color, like crimson, royal blue, or sunny yellow. To make it stand out even more, use a high-gloss paint to add a reflective sheen.

Update the hardware. Add a little style with a new door handle and lock set, decorative house numbers…maybe even a door knocker.

Mail call. From kitschy roadside novelties to fuss-free black boxes mounted by the front door, mailboxes are available in all shapes and sizes and offer yet another way to dress up your exterior. Whatever you choose, be sure it’s standing or hanging straight, has a secure closure, and is free of dents or dings.

Of course, putting your home up for sale isn’t all about the exterior. What’s inside counts just as much. Take your heating and cooling systems, for example. The better their condition, the greater the resale value.
