How to Minimize Dust in Your House

Keeping dust at bay is a never-ending battle. No sooner do you finish wiping down a surface before those pesky little particles come right back home to roost.

Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to reduce total dust accumulation. The result will be less housework and less sneezing for those who don’t play nice with dust.

Minimize Dust in Your House

Avoid shaggy floor coverings. Stick to hardwood, tile, or other solid floor surfaces. If you prefer having something soft under foot, opt for a flat-weave carpet or area rug and vacuum it often.

Use microfiber cloths for dusting. Ditch the feather duster and grab a few microfiber cloths. Their fine fibers attract even more dust than cotton fabrics, plus they come with wand attachments for those hard-to-reach corners and shelves.

Place a heavy-duty doormat at every entrance. Dirt and dust has no problem entering your home on the soles of people’s shoes. That’s why you need a good doormat in front of each entrance. Wash it often; better yet, ask family members and guests to take their shoes off before entering.

Invest in a good vacuum.  If you’re vacuum cleaner has seen better days, upgrade to one with the Rug Institute Seal of Approval and a HEPA filter. Change or clean the filter regularly.

Clean your blinds and curtains regularly.  Dust your blinds with a micro-static cloth; launder or dry clean your curtains twice a year.
