8 Uses for Caulk

When you think uses of caulk, you probably think of sealing drafty windows and touching up old tile. Well, it might surprise you that this simple material, which comes in numerous formulations, also is great for other household projects.

Here are 8 other household problems that you can easily solve with a little know-how and the right type of caulk.

8 Uses for Caulk

  1. Keep bugs and critters out. Caulk can be used to repair small cracks in basement walls and foundations to keep out bugs and rodents. Once it’s dried, you can paint it to hide the patches.
  2. Bridge the gaps in wood. To covers up gaps between baseboards and molding, use an acrylic latex caulk to fill them in.
  3. Prep surfaces for painting. Use painter’s caulk – an acrylic latex compound – to cover or fill small holes and cracks in drywall, wood, masonry, and other surfaces before painting.
  4. Seal and protect. In addition to patching holes, fireproof caulk can help make your home safer. Perfect for sealing holes, gaps, and cracks in interior framing, fireproof caulk also prevents fire from moving through open spaces.
  5. Hold tight. A dab of all-purpose caulk can keep wallpaper, molding, carpet, or a loose tile in place. Just add a small amount behind the loose material and stick it back into place. All-purpose caulk also can be used to install paneling without nails.
  6. Perfect wallpaper application. Keep wallpaper from pulling up as it dries by running caulk along the seams, paying special attention to the corners. Then smooth it out with a wet sponge to remove imperfections.
  7. Easy roof repair. Use roof-repair caulk to seal small cracks between roof shingles, along roof edges, or around skylights and flashing. This type of caulk is waterproof and weatherproof.
  8. Add life to your gutters. Over time, gutters can develop gaps and cracks around joints. Butyl rubber caulk, a strong waterproof sealant, can keep rainwater flowing clear of your home.
